Project Architect, Valerie Dewalt Train
Hiba Bhatty is an award-winning, Chicago-based architect and comedian. After graduating from the Yale School of Architecture, Hiba joined Valerio Dewalt Train (VDT) where she designed Convene, a project that Crain’s Chicago Business listed as one of the Best Event Spaces for 2019. The same year, Hiba was inducted as one of Crain’s Chicago Business “20 in their 20s.” Hiba’s designs have been published in Surface Magazine, Yale Retrospecta, and Italy’s Interni Magazine.
As a Pakistani-American woman architect, Hiba is committed to diversifying the design world by mentoring youth of color and women. She leads VDT’s efforts in the Architecture Construction and Engineering (ACE) Mentoring Program and Noble Network Chicago School Externships. Her ACE team has placed nationally for the Construction Industry Round Table (CIRT) competition twice, and earlier this year, Hiba was Chicago’s sole nominee for the Engineering News-Record (ENR) National ACE Outstanding Mentor of the Year.
Outside of her architecture practice, Hiba strives to connect diverse groups of people through comedy. She has performed stand-up and improv at The Second City, IO Theater, and Annoyance Theatre. She also writes, films, and directs comedic videos with her sister for her YouTube channel, Unsibilized. Their comedic duo recently closed out the sold-out show “Empathy” at Steppenwolf Theatre.
