Diversity Advancement Scholarship
Kayla Angelique Brown became interested in art at a very young age, attending classes at the Cheltenham Art Center at five years old. She has always enjoyed both visual and the performing arts, taking art courses at school and at the Abington Art Center. During her junior year at Abington Friends School, Kayla got the lead role as Molly Aster in Peter and the Starcatcher earning a nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for the 2018 Independence Awards. Apart from art, she is in the Black Student Union, head of the Literary Magazine, head of social media for the Pennypack Teen Advisory Council, a Cappies critic, a Girl Scout Ambassador, and a member of the track team. She also loves to tap dance!
Kayla found out about the ACE Program through Steppingstones Scholars, and began to participate in summer sessions where she learned about architecture and design. After gaining a design perspective during a summer filled with trips and sketching, she knew that architecture was what she wanted to do. Kayla is currently on Team 15 with JKRP Architects. This summer, she’ll learn how to install solar panels in the Bright Solar Futures Summer Training Program. In the fall, she will attend Drexel University as a student in the 2+4 Architecture Program. Kayla’s goal is to be a licensed architect, emphasizing diverse and inclusive spaces for all as well as creative structures. She hopes that more women of color will join the field of Architecture.
