Sydney Tran Nguyen is a visual artist and activist, born and raised in Oakland, California. Sydney attends California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo to pursue a Bachelor of Architecture 2020 and minors in Sustainable Environments and Ethnic Studies. Her interests are primarily focused around design technology research, urbanism, and social equity in local communities.

Sydney’s professional experience has been primarily based in the Greater Los Angeles area, most recently at Gehry Partners, LLP. While at Gehry Partners, she worked with Frank Gehry and the design team specializing in internationally renowned cultural and residential projects, with additional exposure to community outreach with Turnaround Arts at neighboring elementary schools. Prior to Gehry Partners, she is a computational design research assistant for Dr. Umut Toker, where she tinkers with hands on parametric design processes and analyzes the efficiencies of teaching methods implemented at Cal Poly’s Digital Fabrication courses.

At Cal Poly, she is also a student ambassador and chair of Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design’s Diversity and Inclusion committee. She is committed and strategically working with student organizations, faculty, and the dean to enhance the campus climate by embedding diversity and educational equity in all aspects of the university.

Sydney is undoubtedly dedicated to helping empower youth through the changemaking power of design and education. Furthermore, she believes in giving back to her home community because she is grateful for the support given by her family, mentors, and educators.
