“Getting this scholarship was the beacon of hope that showed my family I could graduate from the University of Southern California without a huge heap of debt.”

My name is Esmeralda Aceituno and I am the recipient of the Architects Foundation Diversity Advancement Scholarship. Growing up in a Guatemalan family, college has always been a topic of conversation. My parents have always pushed for me to do everything in my power to attend college, since they know how hard it is to make a living without a college education. When it came time to apply for colleges, my parents and I sat down and had a serious talk about the price tag that comes along with a college education. We did not know how I could possibly attend a prestigious university with a price tag over $50,000. With only one source of steady income, we often struggled keeping our heads above the water as it is. Getting this scholarship was the beacon of hope that showed my family I could graduate from the University of Southern California without a huge heap of debt.
