Mahum Shah is a second-year Dual Master’s student in Architecture and Community Planning at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she also earned her Bachelor of Science in Architecture. She's interested in creating spaces that foster dignity, especially for marginalized and under-resourced communities. She is committed to using the built environment as a tool for self-sufficiency and empowerment through the exploration of sustainable design and vernacular architecture.
Most recently, Mahum has had the privilege of continuing the work from a University of Maryland graduate studio alongside her professor and collaborating partners at the Accokeek Foundation to help envision architectural ideas for Mallow’s Bay Park, a space intended to honor local indigenous culture while creating an inclusive environment for the surrounding community.
Mahum looks forward to the remaining two years of her studies as she works toward her career goals of blending architecture and community planning to address informality in the Global South through vernacular and community-centered design.
